Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh blackberries plus extra for garnish
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice about 2 lemons
  • 2 tablespoons agave syrup or honey for a sweeter touch
  • 1 1/2 cups sparkling water chilled
  • 1 cup blanco tequila choose a smooth, quality brand
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh mint leaves optional, for garnish
  • Lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

  • Start by placing the fresh blackberries in a sturdy glass or cocktail shaker. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently press the blackberries until they release their juice but are not completely pulverized.
  • Add the fresh lemon juice and agave syrup to the muddled blackberries. Stir or shake vigorously to combine and dissolve the sweetener into the tart lemon juice.
  • Pour in the blanco tequila. Give everything a good stir or shake to blend the flavors well.
  • Fill a serving glass halfway with ice cubes, then strain the blackberry-tequila mixture into the glass to remove seeds and pulp. Top off with chilled sparkling water to add a refreshing fizz. Stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish your drink with fresh blackberries, a lemon slice, and a sprig of mint if you like. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Equipment

  • Glass or Cocktail Shaker
  • Muddler or Spoon

Notes

Use ripe, fresh blackberries for best flavor. Adjust sweetness to taste. For a stronger drink increase tequila slightly. Chill sparkling water and glass beforehand. Strain muddled blackberry juice for a smoother drink. Variations include using vodka or gin, adding fresh herbs, making a frozen version, substituting lime for lemon, or adding a sugar rim. Store leftover blackberry tequila mixture (without sparkling water) in refrigerator up to 2 days.
