Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (one 7g packet)
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for kneading
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil plus extra for brushing
  • 2 cloves garlic minced (optional, for garlic butter topping)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • Salt flakes or grated Parmesan cheese for topping (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.
  • Once the yeast is frothy, add the olive oil, salt, and 2 ½ cups of the flour to the bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon or dough hook attachment until the mixture starts to come together. Gradually add the remaining ½ cup of flour, a little at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and becomes smooth but slightly sticky.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed, but be careful not to add too much or the breadsticks will be dense.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it once to coat all sides with oil. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 to 1 ½ hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Transfer it back to a floured surface and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a stick about 6-7 inches long and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving a little space between each stick.
  • Cover the breadsticks loosely with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • If you want garlic-flavored breadsticks, mix the minced garlic with 2 tablespoons of olive oil or melted butter. Brush this mixture generously over the breadsticks. You can also sprinkle some salt flakes or grated Parmesan cheese on top for extra flavor.
  • Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown on top. Remove from the oven and brush once more with any remaining garlic butter.
  • Sprinkle the freshly chopped parsley over the warm breadsticks and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Make sure your water is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast. Don’t skip the second rise to achieve light and fluffy breadsticks. For softer breadsticks, cover with foil halfway through baking; for crispier, bake longer or under the broiler briefly. The breadsticks can be frozen before the second rise and reheated from frozen. Customize with cheese, herbs, spices, or sweet toppings as desired.
