Ingredients

  • 8 beef hot dogs choose your favorite brand
  • 8 hot dog buns soft, fresh, ideally brioche or potato buns
  • 1 lb ground beef lean, about 85% lean
  • 1 small yellow onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup beef broth low sodium
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce check for ingredients to ensure suitability
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • yellow mustard for topping
  • 1/2 cup white onion finely chopped, for topping

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent and soft, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a wooden spoon and cook until browned and no longer pink, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  • Stir in the tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to coat the ground beef evenly with the spices. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine everything.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to a chili-like consistency. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of broth or water to loosen it.
  • While the sauce simmers, grill or pan-fry your hot dogs until heated through and slightly charred, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Place each cooked hot dog into a bun. Spoon a generous amount of the meat sauce over the hot dogs. Top with a drizzle of yellow mustard and a sprinkle of chopped white onions.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite side dishes such as fries, coleslaw, or a simple green salad.

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Grill or Pan

Notes

For best flavor, use fresh spices and toast them lightly before adding the beef. Simmer the sauce to let flavors meld and thicken it perfectly. Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce for heat if desired. Toast buns lightly for a crisp texture. The meat sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
